Transition Milk Trial Conducted at Welsh Dairy Farm – February 2024

Introducing a notable approach to calf nutrition, Welsh dairy farmers Will and Alex Prichard in conjunction with Veterinary Technical Consulting Ltd, are replacing the usual immediate shift to whole milk with enriched transition milk for newborn calves’ first 10 days. This well-considered experiment on their Escalwen farm in Pembrokeshire, funded by the Farming Connect Try Out Fund, builds on promising indicators from North American studies. The initiative aims to improve calf health and farm productivity while reducing carbon emissions and antibiotic usage. As the first large-scale effort of its kind, the dairy industry waits for its results with interest.
